Yosemite Falls Summer oil painting - Sierra Nevada Art

Yosemite Falls, Summer
Original 24 x 18 inch oil painting
on canvas

Yosemite is one of my favorite painting destinations. After painting numerous versions of the falls in a horizontal format (seeing the scope of the valley and meadow in the foreground,) I decided it was time to do a vertical painting featuring the upper falls.

Yosemite Creek feeds the falls from the top, and after a fall of almost 2500 feet, the flow joins the Merced River.

Not this year, but perhaps next year, I hope to visit Yosemite in autumn to capture some of the dazzling color of the turning leaves.

This painting is available for sale now. If you are in the Southern California area, you are welcome to see it in person, please write.

"Eaton Canyon Stream" 9 x 12 inch oil painting
Eaton Canyon Nature Preserve, Altadena, California

Eaton Canyon, near Pasadena, California is a favorite plein air location for me. This painting shows the seasonal stream that runs through it in a "good" rain year. California live oaks grow along the banks, along with willows, sycamores and many other riparian California natives. Interested in this painting? Click this link to write me. karen@karenwinters.com

Quiet Day Carmel Bay oil painting, California seascape

SOLD
Quiet Day, Carmel Bay
11 x 14 seascape oil painting

This is a painting of Carmel Bay, on the Monterey Peninsula, on a quiet day. I love to paint in this area - the sea shows so many different moods and the colors are constantly changing. The day I was there, the sea was like glass. Beautiful, colorful glass.

California Poppy Time - Antelope Valley Oil Painting by Karen Winters

"Poppy Time, Lancaster, California"

Original California poppy landscape oil painting
11 x 14 inches, oil on plein air panel

Very soon, the poppy fields of Lancaster, California will be in full bloom. The Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve is a wonder to behold, as long as it doesn't get too cold or breezy (then, the poppies close up, protectively.)

Pasadena Art: Colorado Street Bridge Landscape Painting - The Bridge Aglow

"The Bridge Aglow"
(The Colorado Street Bridge from a vantage point near the Federal Court of Appeals, Arroyo Seco)

SOLD

11 x 14 inches
plein air painting

In October 2010, I had the opportunity to paint the Colorado Street Bridge from the vantage point a little south of the Federal Courthouse on the east side of the Arroyo Seco, at a private home.

The late afternoon light grazing the bridge created a peaceful mood. The foreground oak tree provided a natural frame for the scene.

An old pepper tree, a typical California sight, leans over a dusty summer hillside in California. The spring grasses have turned dusty brown, but wildflowers are still flourishing.

California impressionist painting - Landscape Oil Painting - Gaviota Springtime - California Art Club Gold Medal Show 100th Anniversary 2011

Gaviota Springtime
11 x 14 oil on linen plein air panel
SOLD in the 100th Anniversary of the California Art Club
Gold Medal Show, 2011, Pasadena Museum of California Art

This painting was exhibited and sold at the Pasadena Museum of California Art in Pasadena, California. It was also featured in an editorial article in the April 2011 issue of American Art Collector magazine.

It represents a graceful eucalyptus tree, arching over a springtime meadow near the coastline town of Gaviota, north of Santa Barbara. This central coast California painting is in the spirit of the early California impressionist painters such as Granville Redmond and others, who captured the natural beauty of the state and were the founders of the California Art Club 100 years ago.

Colorado Street Bridge Pasadena Painting - by Karen Winters

Some people are surprised to learn that there's water under the Colorado Street Bridge in the Arroyo Seco. It's true. And waterfowl love to swim there, depending upon the season.

This 12 x 16 original oil painting is sold but I have many other paintings of the bridges. You are welcome to see them in my studio in La Canada, by appointment.

Bishop Peak Oil Painting, San Luis Obispo, Central Coast California Art

"Farm at Bishop Peak"
San Luis Obispo, Central Coast
oil painting
14 x 18 inches

When I was painting in San Luis Obispo County earlier this spring with the California Art Club, I was especially attracted to the numerous large peaks that rise from the city of San Luis Obispo out to the sea, the last of which is Morro Rock. Bishop Peak (sometimes called Bishop's Peak) is one of the Nine Sisters. Technically they are "volcanic plugs," and the volcanoes that rose above them are long gone. Bishop Peak is the tallest of the formations, and it was noted in the diary of John Muir who wrote:

"The trail brings the traveler suddenly in sight of
Bishop Peak ... The town is fairly encircled with beautiful hills...
the one just named being most conspicuous."

The soft afternoon light and atmospheric mist from the sea made this a picture of rural tranquility that held great appeal for me.

California impressionist landscape oil painting - Arroyo Seco, Pasadena

Snow on the San Gabriels
(Federal Courthouse with view of the Arroyo Seco)
12 x 16 oil on canvas

The winter storms, which may now be over, often leave rare snowcaps on our local mountains - for a few days. I took advantage of one of these unusual scenes last month. This is a view I have painted before, in the autumn when the sycamores are in full color - and will likely paint again through the years with different weather and seasonal looks.
